Sadik Shahidain: Empathy is Hard: Why Web Accessibility is Still an Unsolved Problem in 2022

A developer with a strong interest in web accessibility, Sadik Shahidain (he/his) believes that accessibility should be easier, and his presentation will examine how we can help.

“Empathizing with people very different from yourself, with entirely distinct perceptions of and interactions with the world, is a high energy/effort task. Most accessibility tooling does not attempt to lower or erase this empathy barrier, focusing instead on reducing technical hurdles. A new class of tooling is needed, one that makes empathizing with disabled peoples’ experiences as easy or easier than empathizing with others’.”

Lauren Kieliszewski: “Professional Self-Care”

DevOps-Engineer-turned-Director, Lauren Kieliszewski’s (she/her) interest in technology is matched by her passion for the well-being of the humans that produce and consume it.

Lauren’s presentation will look at how our unique qualities make our whole life better - and the importance of not only recognizing our needs, but successfully advocating for them.
